What Happens if My Child Has a Dental Emergency?

While a dental injury is scary for the parent and the child, there are steps you can take to alleviate discomfort and protect your child’s oral health before their dental visit.

For inflammation and swelling, use a cold compress and have your child hold it against their mouth. This is particularly useful for tooth infections and cracked teeth. If there are any intra-oral cuts as a result of an accident or injury, have your child rinse gently with salt water and use gauze as needed to stem further bleeding.

Don’t panic, though. Cracked and broken teeth can be fixed with help from our LA pediatric dentists. Prompt care from our team helps your child regain a healthy smile.

Emergency Dental Care for Kids and Adults in LA

Dr. Sreenivasan and Burnett often see kids after trip-and-fall accidents, sports injuries, or sudden and painful toothaches – and these can affect adults as well. It’s important to note, however, that if you or your child has any serious cuts or other bodily injuries, along with dental problems, as the result of an accident, visit the emergency room first. After primary health and well-being is looked after, we can provide dental care to restore a comfortable smile.

We provide the following treatments after a dental emergency:

Composite Bonding
Tooth Extractions
Fillings
Dental Crowns

Small chips and cracks can be easily repaired with the use of a material called dental composite. Larger breaks may require the preparation of the damaged tooth and the placement of a dental crown to prevent further cracking and to help your child bite and chew comfortably. If the emergency was caused by a painful toothache, a root canal may be required before a crown. In this case, we work closely with other specialists for effective care. Even if a tooth is too damaged to be saved, it can be extracted to prevent the spread of damage to surrounding teeth.

First and foremost, our goal is to ensure your child is comfortable. We address primary issues such as infection and pain before planning treatment to functionally and aesthetic repair your child’s smile. In some cases, full treatment may take a few dental visits, but your child will leave their first appointment feeling much better and with a plan for care to restore their smile.

We know dental emergencies are difficult; our team is committed to friendly and welcoming dental care for kids. You are in good hands with our experienced specialists and team.
